As the nation marks Ninoy Aquino Day on August 21, 2025, Filipinos across the country reflect on the life and legacy of Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. This annual observance is designated as a special (non-working) holiday, allowing citizens to honor his contributions to democracy and the fight for freedom.
In the Philippines, holidays are categorized based on their significance and impact on the economy. A “special non-working holiday” means that most businesses and government offices will be closed, and employees who do work on this day are entitled to additional compensation as per labor laws.
The declaration of August 21 as a special non-working holiday underscores the importance of remembering the sacrifices of Ninoy Aquino, whose assassination in 1983 became a catalyst for the People Power Revolution that restored democracy in the country.
Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. was a prominent opposition leader during the martial law era under President Ferdinand Marcos. His unwavering advocacy for democracy and resistance against dictatorship made him a symbol of the people’s struggle for freedom. Despite being imprisoned and exiled, he remained vocal about the need for change in the Philippines.
On August 21, 1983, Ninoy Aquino was assassinated upon his return to the country, sparking widespread protests and unrest. His death galvanized the Filipino people, eventually leading to the 1986 People Power Revolution that toppled the Marcos regime and reinstated democratic governance.
Beyond his political role, Ninoy Aquino was also a journalist, an orator, and a thinker whose writings and speeches continue to be studied today. His vision for a just and democratic society remains relevant, serving as a beacon of hope and a call to action for those who seek to protect civil liberties and uphold the rule of law.
Through the years, the nation has honored Ninoy Aquino’s legacy in various ways. Public ceremonies, exhibits, and discussions are held to remember his sacrifice. In 2023 and 2024, August 21 continued to be observed as a special non-working holiday, reinforcing its importance in the nation’s historical consciousness. Educational institutions often hold programs highlighting Aquino’s contributions, ensuring that younger generations understand the significance of his fight for democracy.
In 2025, Filipinos once again take this day to reflect on the significance of Aquino’s contributions and their lasting impact on Philippine democracy. Nationwide commemorations include floral offerings at Aquino’s monument, media retrospectives on his life, and discussions on the enduring relevance of his ideals.
Ninoy Aquino Day serves as a reminder of the courage and determination required to uphold democracy. His famous words, “The Filipino is worth dying for,” continue to resonate, inspiring future generations to cherish and protect the freedoms hard-won by those who came before. His legacy is a testament to the power of peaceful resistance and the unyielding spirit of the Filipino people in the face of oppression. The observance of Ninoy Aquino Day encourages all citizens to take an active role in safeguarding the democratic values he stood for, ensuring that his sacrifice was not in vain.
As the country moves forward, remembering Ninoy Aquino’s dedication to democracy serves as an important lesson on the value of freedom, justice, and the responsibility of every Filipino to protect the nation’s hard-earned liberties.
In 2024, the observance of Ninoy Aquino Day underwent a notable adjustment. Traditionally held on August 21, the commemoration was moved to August 23, 2024, by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. through Proclamation No. 665, signed on August 15, 2024. This change aimed to create a longer weekend to promote domestic tourism, as it coincided with National Heroes’ Day on August 26, resulting in a four-day weekend.
Despite the date change, the essence of the commemoration remained intact. Various institutions, such as the Lyceum of the Philippines University Manila, honored the 41st death anniversary of Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. on August 21, 2024, reflecting on his ideals and sacrifices for democracy and justice.
Many people found the scenario to be a little puzzling last year. Notwithstanding Ninoy Aquino Day’s historical significance, Malacañang Palace took a while to formally affirm its status. The Palace didn’t officially declare August 21, 2023, a special non-working holiday until August 16, 2023.
