Eid al-Adha on June 17, 2024 is a Regular Holiday in the Philippines

It has been confirmed that Eid al-Adha will be celebrated on June 17, 2024. The Malacañang Palace has officially announced this date as a Regular Holiday.

On June 4, 2024, in an official declaration, the Malacañang Palace announced that June 17, 2024 (Monday) will be recognized as a nationwide regular holiday. This decision comes in observance of the Islamic holiday of Eid al-Adha, a significant festival celebrated by Muslims worldwide that marks the culmination of the annual Hajj pilgrimage and includes the ritual of animal sacrifice to commemorate God’s provision. This declaration ensures that the diverse cultural and religious practices within the Philippines, such as Eid al-Adha, are respected and acknowledged, fostering inclusivity and unity among its citizens.

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has declared June 17, Monday, as a regular holiday to observe Eid al-Adha, or the Feast of Sacrifice. Proclamation No. 579, signed by Executive Secretary Lucas P. Bersamin on June 4, states that Eid al-Adha is one of Islam’s two greatest feasts. The holiday declaration on June 17 was recommended by the National Commission on Filipinos, based on the 1445 Hijrah Islamic Lunar Calendar.

“WHEREAS, following the 1445 Hijrah Islamic Lunar Calendar, the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos has recommended that 17 June 2024, Monday, be declared a national holiday, in observance of Eid al-Adha,” – According to the Proclamation 579 from the Official Gazette

Eid al-Adha will be declared on June 17 to align with the 10th day of Zhul Hijja, as stipulated in Republic Act No. 9849

Republic Act No. 9849, enacted on December 11, 2009, declares the 10th day of Zhul Hijja, the 12th month of the Islamic Calendar, as a national holiday for the observance of Eid’l Adha, also known as the Feast of Sacrifice. This Act recognizes the importance of Eid’l Adha in the Islamic faith and ensures that Filipino Muslims have the opportunity to celebrate this significant religious holiday. The date of Eid al-Adha varies each year based on the Islamic lunar calendar, which is why Republic Act No. 9849 ensures that the holiday is observed on the correct day according to the Islamic tradition.
